K12 - AKS counter Description
The AKS counter consists of a converter followed by a system
of scintillators. The converter is either amorphous Lead or an
aligned Iridium crystal. In the latter case the converter is
mounted on a goniometer (see picture) that allows to align the
crystal lattice with the neutral beam. By this technique the
conversion probability can be enhanced while the hadronic
interaction length remains the same.
The counter is placed 6 metres downstream of the KS
production target. It defines the start of the fiducial volume
for KS.
