XTAX Description

A TAX (for Target Attenuator eXperimental areas) is a mobile dump collimator that allows to either dump or delimit the acceptance of a primary beam. It consists of a water-cooled table, mobile in the vertical plane, on which 4 blocks of Iron or Copper are placed. Normally the first block(s) (40 cm long each) are Copper, whereas the remaining blocks are Iron. At well-chosen positions in the block, holes of different sizes are made, that allow a different beam emittance to pass through. In most beams one of the holes of a TAX is filled with at least 80 cm of Beryllium, that serves as attenuator. The vertical position can be moved from +140 mm (Dump) to -140 mm (largest hole). It is possible to limit the range of the movements for reasons of safety.

Most of the TAXES are part of the access chain, i.e. the TAXES are moved (and blocked) into DUMP position in case access to the experimental area is required.
