XCED: CEDAR counters

CEDAR counters are CErenkov Differential counters with Achromatic Ring focus. These counters are available in some of the high-energy beamlines to obtain particle identification data for individual particles in that beamline.

  • CEDAR-N can separate kaons from pions up to 300 GeV/c but can detect protons only down to 12 GeV/c.
  • CEDAR-W can flag protons of 12 GeV/c and separate kaons from pions up to 150 GeV/c.
The performance of the CEDAR counters is strongly dependent on the beam optics. For ultimate performance, a highly parallel beam is required.

A readout system through the EA computers is available for setting up the counter properly. The signal is also sent directly to the user for readout through his private data acquisition system.

A detailed write up of the design, performance and operation of CEDAR counters can be found in CERN yellow report CERN 82-13, "The CEDAR counters for particle identification in the SPS secondary beams: a description and operation manual" by C.Bovet et al.
